Martin Obster is a Patent Attorney with the firm Peterreins Schley. After joining the firm in 2018 for his legal training, Martin was admitted as a German patent attorney in 2022 and as a European patent attorney in 2023.
His practice emphasizes patent drafting and prosecution work before the European and German Patent and Trademark Offices. Martin also advises clients in expanding and managing their patent portfolios internationally. With his experience in freedom to operate analyses, Martin helps his clients in assessing the risk of entering new markets and in building strong patent portfolios for their new products. Martin is involved in opposition, appeal, nullity and infringement matters, and is further experienced in non-infringement analyses and registered designs. While advising start-ups as well as large international clients in all matters of patent law, Martin enjoys working closely with each client in finding individual solutions to best protect and manage their IP interests in Europe, including new legal opportunities (e.g., European Patent with Unitary Effect and Unified Patent Court), strategic needs, and other IP-related aspects such as employee invention law.
Prior to starting his work in the IP field, Martin studied Aerospace Engineering at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and IST University of Lisbon, focusing on Aerodynamics, Aircraft and Helicopter Design, Flight Propulsion Systems and Aerospace Structures. Subject of his Master's Thesis was the Aerodynamic Modelling of Counter-Rotating UAV Propellers and Configurations of Equivalent Mode of Action, carried out at the Institute of Aircraft Design (TUM-LLS). Besides his high school education, Martin completed a carpentry apprenticeship and received his journeyman's certificate. Alongside his studies, he worked for large companies (incl. BMW AG and MTU Aero Engines) in the field of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
