Stefan Kohl is a Patent Attorney with the firm Peterreins Schley. After joining the firm in 2017 for his legal training, Stefan was admitted as a German patent attorney and as a European patent attorney in 2021.

His practice emphasizes patent drafting and prosecution work of DE, EP and PCT applications, but Stefan also advises clients in expanding and managing their patent portfolios internationally including, inter alia, US, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Indian jurisdictions. With his experience in patent mining and freedom to operate analyses, Stefan helps his clients in assessing the risks of entering new markets and in building strong patent portfolios for their new products. Stefan also supports in opposition, appeal, nullity and infringement matters. While advising start-ups as well as large international clients in all matters of patent law, Stefan enjoys working closely with each client in finding individual solutions to best protect and manage their IP interests in Europe including new legal opportunities (e.g. European Patent with Unitary Effect and Unified Patent Court), strategic needs, and other IP-related aspects such as employee invention law.

Prior to starting his legal training at Peterreins Schley, Stefan studied Mechanical Engineering at RWTH University Aachen focusing on Production Technologies and Optical Technologies. In his Master’s thesis, he addressed the process development of Selective Laser Melting, carried out experimentally during a research placement at RMIT University Melbourne. Alongside his studies, Stefan gained technical experience in the fields of electromobility and additive manufacturing at the university institute WZL as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology. During his internship and Bachelor’s thesis at car manufacturer Porsche in Stuttgart, Stefan gained hands-on insights in planning highly automized car production processes and systems.
